Life at our lake cottage is mostly wonderful.  But, every summer the same problems come up:  what to do with the ducks on the dock who leave “presents” and the swallows that want to roost in the hoist.  The ducks have worn me out. They waddle defiantly, and I follow with my broom.  The swallows, however, are a different story.   The first time they started their construction, the small clump of pine needles ended up in the water.  This was not a deterrent.  The second time, the dense stack floated away with a little help.  The third time presented me with a dilemma.  There were eggs in the nest.  That got me to thinking about worldview.

It has been surprising to find Christians who are pro-life when it comes to endangered species and pro-choice if it refers to human babies. The diligence required to preserve oil-coated gulls or rescue alligator off-spring is not equally applied to the unborn.  Why is that?  It stems from the basis for value of human life. (Foundational Presupposition Chart)  Biblically, human beings are made in the image of God and have unique characteristics that animals do not have.  The order of creation provides man as the overseer of the animal kingdom, not their equal.  It is the responsibility of humankind to do this with careful consideration.  The higher calling, however, is to see that the dignity and respect for human life is maintained.  Without this, there is no basis for human rights at all, and even the notion that respect is due someone who is an activist of some sort is ultimately lost.

So, what happened to the prickly pod situated above the boat?  If you are thinking it can’t be thrown away, then the logical assumption is that you are pro-life.  You are willing to speak up on behalf of those in the womb, as well as the nest.  For those who think the pesky feathered parents should get the “three strikes and you’re out” plan, your worldview is not so easily discerned.  It leads to an intriguing question we should be asking often:  what do you believe and why do you believe it?
