Yesterday I walked out of Michaels and found a note tucked in the handle of my 4Runner.  My first thought was that someone hit me, and that they left their phone number.  Not so.  It was actually an advertisement for an astrologer’s services.  Not only could I get advise from “Eve” through the stars, I could get a glimpse into my future.  Her name and business were intriguing, so I called the number listed.  She answered right away, and I began to have a heart for her and how confused she was.

It didn’t take long for her to tell me she was well-respected, even on television as a trustworthy source  for clients interested in “spiritual” matters.  The motive for her, besides making money, was to be a place where the hurting could talk to someone and get support.  She admitted that only “God” knew the future and that Jesus was part of that mix.

One of the questions I had for her was whether she believed the Bible was true.  An astounding answer:  yes.  Then, of course, I wanted to know if she had read the book of Deuteronomy (chapter 18).  Apparently not, but she said she would look it over.  Then, the follow-up:  if God said that what she was doing was wrong, would she be willing to forsake her practice?  That didn’t get a direct “yes” or “no”.  My parting words for her were that I would pray for her.  I definitely will.

This may seem like an extreme example of someone’s beliefs, but actually, it is not.  As indicated in past articles on the website, many who think they are doing the will of God have never really consulted God. Feelings, inanimate objects, “luck”, cultural norms and many other idols replace the core of a Biblical worldview:  the Word of God.

Reflecting on this incident, I remember the first Eve and how she was deceived.  It is so encouraging to know that there was a remedy for the lies that misled her, and there still is.  We don’t have to try to figure out how stars line up, we need to open up the pages of Scripture and see what the One who made the stars can do.  The Eve I spoke with is able to escape the realm of dark deception, as we pray for her.

You were in the right place and were persistent. Hopefully your contact and prayers will make an impact on "Eve". It just took a minute to call but so often we are so busy in our lives that we don't take that minute. It can mean the difference in someones life following in Christ's footsteps.

Hi Kathy - I applaud your ability to "elevate the conversation". This article reminded me of an interview of Andrew Marin I heard on Friday's Prime Time America program. In that discussion, Andrew was encouraging listeners to "elevate the conversation" rather than default to unhelpful combat debate positions. Here's a link to the recording for those interested -
