Is Julius Wellhausen in Government Schools?

by Kathy Brown on May 29th, 2009 | 0 comments

Julius Wellhausen lived from 1844 until 1918.  He was a German Old Testament scholar who was an evolutionist that applied that theory to everything, even the Bible.  He said the Bible must not be thought of as the Word of God, but as the best of human books.  He led a movement which we have come to know as "religious liberalism".

Secular Humanists (Foundational Presupposition Chart) say they are the judge of the Bible.  Christians say that the Bible comes from God and it judges us.  Which religious worldview is found in public government schools today?

It must be noted that schools in America started out with the Biblical Christian worldview.  Our history, from a faith perspective, is described by David Barton in a little book:  Education and the Founding Fathers.  It is published by Wallbuilders, Inc.

Abraham Lincoln observed:  "The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next."  Do you think he was right?

Is Karl Marx in Government Schools?

by Kathy Brown on May 28th, 2009 | 0 comments

Karl Marx published the Communist Manifesto in 1848.  In it, he contends that class struggle is the reason for the world's problems; thus, competition should be eliminated. Communism is based on atheism and materialism.  The decision-maker in the system is the authority of the government.

It doesn't take too much examination to figure out that the ideas of Karl Marx have drifted into our concept of education.

(1)  The concept of competition has definitely been thwarted (see blog on "Who is the National Education Association?")

(2)  Originally, Americans educated their children locally. The New England Primer was the first textbook ever printed in America (Boston 1690).  Until 1900, it was the primary text from which students learned to read.  Although the cover page might change, it always contained the "Rhyming Alphabet".  Here is how it began:

  • A--In Adam's fall, we sinned all
  • B--Heaven to find, the Bible mind
  • C--Christ crucified, for sinners died

Under the guise of "neutrality", God has been purged from public school curriculum and tax dollars are not allowed to fund any so-called "religious" school.  By default (Foundational Presupposition Chart), Secular Humanism (including atheism) results.  This assumes a materialist view of the world.

(3)  Is there any doubt that government controls the education of America?  In order to escape its grasp, parents must buy their way out (fund schools they don't use and pay for schools they do want)!  The standards and scope of what children should and shouldn't know is determined not by parents, but by government.  Even in states with vouchers, like Ohio, the vouchers can only go to "approved" schools.

Does Marxism creep around our system of education?  Or has it boldly stomped right in?
